That's quite interesting, funny how people start out in one place and end up on opposite ends of the earth.

I had my hair done by a Ukrainian man who was forcibly enlisted into the Soviet army as a teenager and then eventually ended up in Afghanistan. (And from there, cutting hair in Chicago...how weird!) He said I reminded him of some Afghani girl he knew while he was on his tour of duty. That part sort of creeped me out though.

Ashi: After he talked about that girl, did he suddenly stop talking and look into space for a minute as if he was having a flashback?

confusedaboutlife: Nope. I haven't read that book. I just Wikipediaed it--it sounds interesting! I don't know if the Armenian guy's name was Archie like how I spelled it, but that's what it sounded like.

Amber: He didn't say what religion, if any, he practiced. I doubt he was Muslim. Otherwise, he probably would've mentioned it.

I am sometimes amused how people associate specific words or sentences with religion. In India its like mashAllah, Alhamdullilah, etc.

Hasan,
Yes he did get a weird look, which is why I thought it was creepy. I mean, Afghan women didn't interact with Soviet soldiers unless it was under malicious circumstances (generally). So I would like to know exactly how it is that he even saw this girl's face, let alone have any sort of interaction with her. It seems suspicious.

By the way, thanks for adding me to your blogroll. I added you as well, as "Lungis.com" I can change the link to something else if you'd prefer. Let me know.

really enjoyed reading this (esp. the dialogue); getting to know someone else's story while you're away from home is one of the best experiences one can have. I've never forgotten the people I met like that.

(this is the second time I'm typing this - as I had forgotten to answer your spam guard initially; hey, I did pretty well, got it exact word for word!)
